Happy Birthday,
Klaus Nomi!!!

From the WikiWackyWoo:

Klaus Sperber (January 24, 1944 – August 6, 1983), better known as Klaus Nomi, was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona.

Nomi was known for his bizarrely visionary theatrical live performances, heavy make-up, unusual costumes, and a highly stylized signature hairdo which flaunted a receding hairline. His songs were equally unusual, ranging from synthesizer-laden interpretations of classical music opera to covers of 1960s pop standards like Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” and Lou Christie’s “Lightnin’ Strikes”. He is remembered in the US as one of David Bowie’s backup singers for a 1979 performance on Saturday Night Live.

Nomi died in 1983 at the age of 39 as a result of complications from AIDS.

Headlines Du Jour ► Thursday, January 23, 2014

It’s been a very long night of headline-collecting, now that I am back to doing the job myself. I fired all my interns when they asked for a raise. Then the headline-collecting robot drones I outfitted, left my employ when they became self-aware.

I’m going back to interns, as soon as I can find some naive enough to believe my promises. Meanwhile, here’s today’s Headlines Du Jour.

Headlines Du Jour ► The Martin Luther King Edition

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal …

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Urban streets named for MLK still struggle

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.”

Is This Any Way to Remember MLK?
Racism is alive and well in America. So why is the new voting rights act so weak?

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Guam Residents celebrate legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”

Martin Luther King Jr. on Dreams, Love, and Perseverance

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

‘No shots fired’ day urged to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.”

Four ways Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to battle inequality

“The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.”

Editorial: King preached unconditional tolerance

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

Railey: What if Dr. King had been white?

“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”

Letter: Martin Luther King Day sales disgraceful
